百里香是化學成分主要由黃酮類化合物和抗氧化劑組成。黎巴嫩國際大學於2022年的文獻回顧性研究中，總結百里香酚和香芹酚多種藥理特性對各種疾病的治療作用。百里香長期以來對於抗病毒、抗菌、抗真菌和防腐活性而聞名，還能顯著破壞微生物生物膜 (Hammoudi Halat et al, 2022)。

伊朗Razi大學於2022年發表的的研究係利用分子模擬，探索百里香化合物對血管收縮素轉化酶2(angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, ACE2)的抑制能力，建議使用百里香預防感染和限制COVID-19傳播(Hadidi, 2022)。
